Summary

Everyone in my family has killed someone。 Some of us, the high achievers, have killed more than once。 I'm not trying to be dramatic, but it is the truth。 Some of us are good, others are bad, and some just unfortunate。

I'm Ernest Cunningham。 Call me Ern or Ernie。 I wish I'd killed whoever decided our family reunion should be at a ski resort, but it's a little more complicated than that。

Have I killed someone? Yes。 I have。

Who was it?

Let's get started。

One of the funniest and darkest locked room mysteries I have ever read。 Funny because of the 4th wall breaking over and over and over。 Dark because well…murders。

Stevenson gives Aussie writers a good rep。 I do hope that he's not writing from experience。 This is a good read。 Stevenson gives Aussie writers a good rep。 I do hope that he's not writing from experience。 This is a good read。 。。。more

This was SUCH a fun mystery! A little slow to start and not super realistic but who cares?

So delightful to read。 The narrator, who is one of the characters,"speaks" to the reader。 I read some reviews in which the reviewers expressed they didn't like that。 I found it to be entertaining and a fresh way of telling a story。It is a bit slow to start, while character backgrounds are established。 However, as the reader will discover at the end, these are all a vital part of the story。 It is in the little details that the best clues are found! I think I maybe would've liked this better if I had read it physically instead of listening to it so I could go back and double check things because I did get confused a lot。。。 I think I maybe would've liked this better if I had read it physically instead of listening to it so I could go back and double check things because I did get confused a lot。。。 。。。more

Probably closer to 3。75。 Really fun murder mystery

Robin

I loved the way the author tells the story in first person narrator。 The rules of a mystery, applied throughout the book were fun too。 The revelation of the murderer did slightly seem misleading though。

Agatha Christie would be proud or jealous, who knows。 I thought the quippy fourth wall breaking would get annoying, but it doesn't distract from the narrative。 Which perfectly paced。 Not too high octane and not to cozy。 The "past element" unveils beautifully。 There are times when the author acts clever but again, it is not distracting。 Agatha Christie would be proud or jealous, who knows。 I thought the quippy fourth wall breaking would get annoying, but it doesn't distract from the narrative。 Which perfectly paced。 Not too high octane and not to cozy。 The "past element" unveils beautifully。 There are times when the author acts clever but again, it is not distracting。 。。。more

This is probably a 3。75-ish stars if I really think about it, but due to the fact that the killer’s big reveal at the end essentially stumped me I have to give it 4 stars on here。 I love being stumped but also hate not being right。 Listen, I love me a good murder book。 I love the fast-paced nature, the gathering and solving of clues, and of course I love the murder。 I feel like these books are good for me because I’m consistently overthinking and can therefore figure out majority of plot twists, This is probably a 3。75-ish stars if I really think about it, but due to the fact that the killer’s big reveal at the end essentially stumped me I have to give it 4 stars on here。 I love being stumped but also hate not being right。 Listen, I love me a good murder book。 I love the fast-paced nature, the gathering and solving of clues, and of course I love the murder。 I feel like these books are good for me because I’m consistently overthinking and can therefore figure out majority of plot twists, given the characters and clues throughout the plot, and revel in the vindication of putting it all together way before the narrator or protagonist can。 But I couldn’t figure it out here, and though it’s bad for my ego it’s great for the story because it consistently keeps the reader guessing。 I’m sure I had 2-3 solid suspects the entire time and expected certain plot twists but I was still wrong。 I just…yeah I got very little right and it’s bugging me。Two things to point out: 1) the narrative style was fantastic。 I think Ernest was truly a fantastic narrator and I kind of loved that the book was essentially the book he was writing of the events so it made for a lot of fun side commentary of “presently writing Ernest” explaining or disclaiming certain things to the reader and poking fun at his editor and it brought a lot of light to the story, I think。 I honestly don’t mind when murder books are written in first person because I kind of prefer to be with the protagonist as they figure it out and I like the way Ernest set out the whole mystery。 Also, the prologue was the funniest thing I’ve read in a while and it did a great job of setting the tone for the whole book。 2) the narrative structure, however, not my fave。 While I thought it was interesting to essentially section the book by each family member and reveal who they’ve all killed, it did provide you with a process of elimination for the actual killer。 Granted, we could’ve had a plot twist later on for one of these but I couldn’t see that happening。 So the further you got, the less suspects you actually have to work with and you keep thinking “alright we haven’t mentioned this person maybe they’re behind it all” type of thing, which again is fine but part of me feels like it was to kind of dumb down the mystery, I suppose。 Overall, this was a fun book。 I really don’t like reading books written by men but I suppose I can give this one a pass because he wrote a fun story and did it without, you know, writing a woman in your typical misogynistic male lens。 So 2 points to this author。 The reveal was really fascinating and all of the characters were (mostly) layered and not your usual archetypes in these novels or the dumb Knives Out movies (which this comped but this book is so much better) so yeah, I enjoyed it。 。。。more

I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say that this might very well be my all-time favorite mystery book。 It was such an absolute joy to read, from the funny and witty writing style to the interesting cast of characters to the very well-constructed plot。 It was truly a breath of fresh air that packed a punch with its originality and uniqueness and that always managed to keep a level of unwavering intrigue that was really quite astounding。 I particularly loved the way that information was gradual I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say that this might very well be my all-time favorite mystery book。 It was such an absolute joy to read, from the funny and witty writing style to the interesting cast of characters to the very well-constructed plot。 It was truly a breath of fresh air that packed a punch with its originality and uniqueness and that always managed to keep a level of unwavering intrigue that was really quite astounding。 I particularly loved the way that information was gradually revealed to the reader because instead of having one big final twist there were many surprises throughout the whole story that made sure it was a page-turner from start to finish。 Plus, another striking aspect was the fact that it was one of the very few mysteries/thrillers where I actually grew to care for the characters, which is usually something I struggle with in this genre, but here they sneaked into my heart in a way I hadn't predicted at all, adding extra layers to the mystery itself that I appreciated so much。Overall, I think I just realized that I am a big fan of stories within a particular genre that poke fun at the tropes of said genre。 The Love Interest by Cale Dietrich did it for romance, The Rest of Us Just Live Here by Patrick Ness did it for fantasy, and now Everyone In My Family Has Killed Someone did it for mystery。 It's also the second book I gave 5 stars to this year and I do believe it's a very strong contender for the ultimate top list of impactful reads – in my opinion it was that much of a masterpiece。 。。。more

I love a murder mystery with twists and turns and this author did not disappoint with so many of them。 The author has a great sense of humor。

I really liked the quirky writing style of this mystery- I saw from other reviews that not all readers did。 The story is told in a first person account with the character Ernest Cunningham addressing the reader in a friendly, chatty way。 I liked that the author compared the book in a humorous way to Golden Age mysteries and the “rules” that many of those authors followed。 He also referenced many tropes and cliches of mysteries which as a avid reader of mysteries, I appreciated the humor in this。 I really liked the quirky writing style of this mystery- I saw from other reviews that not all readers did。 The story is told in a first person account with the character Ernest Cunningham addressing the reader in a friendly, chatty way。 I liked that the author compared the book in a humorous way to Golden Age mysteries and the “rules” that many of those authors followed。 He also referenced many tropes and cliches of mysteries which as a avid reader of mysteries, I appreciated the humor in this。 There may be authors who have done this better (Anthony Horwitz for one) but I still thought this was fun to read。 The plot was complicated and the details of the mystery were a little hard to follow at times, but overall I liked how the plot unfolded。 My only issue was the ending。 No spoilers here - The mystery is wrapped up at the end but I didn’t really fully understand the motives behind the solutions to the mystery。 I’ll have to wait for someone to discuss the book with。 。。。more

I loved the humour and how it ripped up the locked room mystery

Satirical to a fault。 The storyline is unoriginal, I assume the satire was supposed to make up for that but it failed。

This book is best digested in a few big gulps, as opposed to snippets over the course of weeks as my schedule forced me to do。 The conversational tone and direct-to-reader asides had the potential to be gimmicky, but fully subsumed me when I had the chance to read large chunks at a time。 Unfortunately, that wasn’t very often, and I think that’s what led me to feel somewhat unsatisfied with the story and the ending。 Probably just bad timing on my end, but for me it was only 3 or 3。5 stars。

Loved this book。 Loved it。 It's very meta, which I enjoy, and it's funny but it's also surprisingly poetic at times。 Loved this book。 Loved it。 It's very meta, which I enjoy, and it's funny but it's also surprisingly poetic at times。 。。。more

This was so much fun to read。 I can't say I've ever said that about a crime fiction novel before。 The concept is very clever and even though I started out somewhat confused, I quickly adapted with the author's quirky narration style。 I did find the final reveal a bit complex and hard to follow in parts。 I had to re-read the last few chapters to make sure I fully grasped the concept。 But this didn't affect my overall enjoyment。 This was so much fun to read。 I can't say I've ever said that about a crime fiction novel before。 The concept is very clever and even though I started out somewhat confused, I quickly adapted with the author's quirky narration style。 I did find the final reveal a bit complex and hard to follow in parts。 I had to re-read the last few chapters to make sure I fully grasped the concept。 But this didn't affect my overall enjoyment。 。。。more

I enjoyed this book immensely! It was not at all what I expected, so much fun, and I really didn’t guess any of the big things that happened!

Ernest Cunningham is the new Hercule Poirot。 I immensely enjoyed this book。 I didn’t predict any of the outcomes…。 It left my jaw on the floor。 The writing style was very unique and unlike any other book I’ve ever read。 Fans of Agatha Christie will love this。 It really was so so good!

This was an interesting mystery, though I did figure out the twist。 Apparently it’s being adapted for a series and I’ll certainly give that a try if that comes about。

The title of this book is what drew me in。。。the way it's written is why I am on the fence as to whether I really liked it or just continued to read it to the end to see if I understood what was happening a bit more。 You are told which chapters someone will be murdered in。 I will definitely say it's not the best book I have ever read nor is it the worst。。。especially since I continued reading it instead of giving up on it like I usually do。It's a murder mystery involving members of the Cunningham The title of this book is what drew me in。。。the way it's written is why I am on the fence as to whether I really liked it or just continued to read it to the end to see if I understood what was happening a bit more。 You are told which chapters someone will be murdered in。 I will definitely say it's not the best book I have ever read nor is it the worst。。。especially since I continued reading it instead of giving up on it like I usually do。It's a murder mystery involving members of the Cunningham family who are dysfunctional in my opinion。 The back cover indicates that this will be adapted into a major HBO TV series soon。 。。。more
